Easter Countdown Family Activity: Jesus Walks on Water

7 Days before Easter

Passage: Matthew 14:22-33

Verse: Matthews 14:27

Theme: Jesus Walks on Water

Teaching:

After feeding the crowd of people, Jesus sent the disciples out onto the lake in their boat and spent some time alone praying.

Later that night, it was very windy, and the disciple’s boat was rocking a lot. Remember, they’re out in their boat in the middle of a big lake. It probably felt pretty scary to have the boat blowing around and rocking so much! And as if that wasn’t enough, the disciples looked up and saw a man walking towards them on top of the water.

Now I don’t know about you, but I can’t walk on top of water. Can you? What would happen if you tried? That’s right, you’d sink right to the bottom! People can’t walk on water!

But Jesus is not like everyone else. Remember? Jesus is so amazing that he can do anything! Even walk on top of water!

So there are the disciples in the rocking, scary boat looking at someone walking on top of the water towards them. The Bible says they were terrified! They thought it was a ghost!

But Jesus doesn’t like for us to be afraid, so he immediately told them, “Take courage! It’s me! Don’t be afraid.”

Peter said, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” He wanted to walk on the water, too!

So you know what? Jesus told him to come! So Peter got out of the boat, and he walked on water, too!

At first it was really cool. Except Peter forgot to keep his eyes on Jesus. He looked around and saw the wind and the scary waves and got scared. And when he stopped looking at Jesus and instead looked at the trouble around him, you know what happened? He started to sink! Oh no!

“Lord, save me!” Peter cried.

And you know what that amazing Jesus did? He immediately reached out his hand and cagey Peter, pulling him back up.

“Peter, why did you doubt?” Jesus asked.

Even though it’s hard sometimes, Jesus is so amazing and good that we don’t have to doubt him! We can have faith and trust that Jesus loves us and will give us just what we need at the moment we need it.

Isn’t he a good God? He takes care of us, and he doesn’t want us to be afraid. And he is amazing because he can do anything!

Today we’re going to make a craft to help us remember when Jesus walked on the water.
