Easter Countdown Family Activity: Jesus Prays for Us

3 Days before Easter

Passage: John 17:20-26

Verse: John 17:20b-21

Theme: Jesus Prays for Us

Teaching:

Did you know that when Jesus was here on earth, he prayed for you? It’s true! Jesus often spent time alone talking to God. Some of those prayers are recorded in the Bible for us to learn from. While he was praying, Jesus always spent time worshipping and thanking God. He also asked God to help him with whatever he needed.

In today’s passage, Jesus prayed for the disciples. He knew that life was going to become quite difficult for them, and he knew they’d need God’s encouragement. Jesus knew he was about to die on the cross for our sins, and that it would be sad and scary for the disciples. He prayed that God would protect the disciples and make them holy with the truth of who Jesus is.

Then Jesus prayed for everyone who was going to hear the disciples’ message. That’s us! You see, the disciples told everyone they met about Jesus. Then those people told more people. Then they told even more people. And on and on for 2,000 years! Then someone told me, and I believed. And now I teach you, so that you know about Jesus, too!

Jesus prayed that we would be united with each other, just like he and the Father are united. He wants us to love each other and be like family- God’s family- helping each other when needed.

He also prayed that we would stay close to God. When we’re close to God, we act more like Jesus and show better love to the world. In this way, people will know that God loves them.

Just like Jesus prayed all the time, we should pray, too! We can pray like Jesus told us to, by

Worshipping God (called adoration);

Telling him we’re sorry for the bad things we do (called confession);

Thanking him for all the good things he has given us and the way he takes care of us (called thanksgiving); and

Asking him for the things we need (called supplication).

We can remember this with the acronym ACTS.

Prayer is so important that we want to spend time as a family doing it. Today we’re going to make some prayer cards for our family. We’ll write down the things and people we want to pray for and use the cards to remember it all.
