Easter Countdown Family Activity: Jesus feeds the 5,000

8 Days before Easter

Passage: John 6:1-13

Verse: John 6:11

Theme: Jesus feeds the 5,000.

Teaching:
One day Jesus was with the disciples on a mountainside. A huge crowd of people had heard about his miracles, and they came to see him. Jesus had been healing sick people, helping blind people see, deaf people hear, and people who had never been able to walk could now run around! The crowd wanted to see this amazing Jesus.

Seeing the large crowd, Jesus asked his disciples, “where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” (Of course, Jesus already knew where the bread would come from, but he wanted to point out to the disciples how amazing the thing he was about to do was!)
The disciples responded that it would cost a LOT of money to feed all these people! They thought it would be impossible to feed 5,000 men, plus women and children.

But nothing is impossible for Jesus! He is so amazing that he can do anything!

One of the disciples, Andrew, told Jesus that there was a little boy in the crowd who had five loaves of bread and two small fishes. Of course, this wasn’t enough to feed 5,000 people! At least, it wasn’t enough for a normal person to feed 5,000 people.

But remember, Jesus is so amazing that he can do anything?

So Jesus took the food, and he prayed and thanked God for it. Then the told the disciples to pass the bread and fish out to all the people, letting each person take as much as he or she wanted.

And you know what? There was plenty of food!

In fact, after everyone had eaten, the disciples filled up twelve baskets with pieces of extra bread! What a miracle!

(Optional) Today we’re going to bake a loaf of bread! Whenever we see a loaf of bread, I want us to remember the time that Jesus fed 5,000 men, women, and children with just five small loaves of bread and five small fishes. We’ll remember that Jesus is so amazing that he can do anything!
