Easter Countdown Family Activity: Jesus Died for Us

2 Days before Easter- Good Friday

Passage: John 19:16b-18

Verse: John 19:30

Theme: Jesus Died for Us

I’m afraid today I have something very sad to tell you. Our amazing, wonderful, kind Jesus has been telling us over and over again that he will one day have to die for our sins. You see, every person who has ever lived, ever, in all of time, has sinned. Even me. Even you. And the Bible teaches us that even one sin- even one bad thought, or one naughty action- separates us from God, because God is Holy. Heaven is a perfect place, and God is a perfect God, so no sin can ever be in Heaven. That means we can never go to Heaven and be with God unless we have a Savior.

But, Jesus- amazing, brave, strong, kind Jesus- he is our Savior!

In order to save us, something terrible had to happen though. Jesus was hurt and then killed. He had to die in order to pay the punishment for our sins, the bad things we do. You see, either he had to be punished or we would. And he loves us so much that he couldn’t bear the thought of us suffering our own punishment.

So he was punished instead.

Our amazing Jesus is so very kind and loving.

For three days he was buried in a tomb. The disciples cried. Jesus’ friends cried. The whole world seemed to be sad.

Then something amazing happened. A woman named Mary went to Jesus’ tomb to take care of his body with some special spices. But when she got there, the tomb was empty! Jesus’ body was gone!

Oh, Mary was so sad! She cried and cried. As she cried, she looked again into the tomb, and to her surprise, two angels were sitting there! They asked her why she was crying.

“They have taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where they have put him,” she said.

Then Mary turned around, and Jesus was standing right there! But she didn’t recognize him. She thought he was the gardener!

Jesus asked her, “Why are you crying? Who are you looking for?”

Mary was still so sad and said, “Sir, if you have taken him away, please tell me where you have put him and I will get him.”

Then something so special happened. Jesus said just one word.

Jesus called Mary by name, and she immediately knew it was him!

Jesus was alive! He had risen again, just like he said he would!

Oh, isn’t our Jesus so amazing? You see, he never sinned. He was so good, and he did not deserve the punishment of death, so he took away all of death’s power. Death couldn’t keep him!

And guess what else? If we believe in him- if we believe that we are sinners and need a Savior, and if we believe that Jesus is that Savior, then death can’t keep us either! We will get to spend all of eternity in Heaven with our amazing Jesus.

That’s why Easter Sunday, when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection- him rising from the dead- is such an important day for our family. Easter Sunday gives us the best news the world has ever had. We have a Savior who loves us, and we can be with him forever.
